China-based automotive and technology company Xpeng continues to develop one of the most remarkable projects in “flying car” technology, transforming a long-discussed future concept into a tangible mobility solution. Rather than a single vehicle, the system is designed as a modular platform that combines ground and air transportation, offering a new approach to mobility.
The system consists of a “mother vehicle” and an integrated vertical take-off flying module. While the ground vehicle operates like a high-capacity electric SUV, the flying module can detach when needed and operate independently in the air. This structure enables users to experience flexible transportation across both road and air environments.
Built on a fully electric architecture, the system features vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, eliminating the need for a runway. This provides a significant advantage, particularly for urban mobility and short-distance private transport scenarios. The project also incorporates automatic docking and separation technologies, advanced battery systems, and autonomous control software.
According to Xpeng’s plans, the Land Aircraft Carrier is expected to enter limited production and delivery in 2026. In the initial phase, the focus is expected to be on private applications, tourism, and VIP transportation rather than mass consumer use.
Although the concept of a “flying car” has long been considered a vision of the future, Xpeng’s system demonstrates that the technology is now moving beyond the prototype stage toward commercialization. However, widespread adoption still depends on the development of air traffic regulations, safety standards, and supporting infrastructure.
